A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for the sexual assault of a woman he met by chance on the Margate seafront.

Amer Mohammed, an Eritrean national of no fixed address, was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Thursday, 18 December, following a 10-day trial earlier this year.

The court heard that in the early hours of Saturday, 10 August 2024, Mohammed approached the victim as she walked alone along the Margate Promenade. Under the guise of inviting her to a party, he walked a short distance with her before carrying out the sexual assault. The victim managed to break free and flag down a passing vehicle.

In a stroke of fortune, the car was being driven by an off-duty Kent Police officer, who immediately transported her to Margate Police Station to report the crime.

Detectives from Kent Police identified Mohammed through a series of forensic and investigative leads. Following his arrest and subsequent charges, a jury at Canterbury Crown Court found him guilty of sexual assault on 9 October 2025.

Detective Constable Chris Harvey, said:

‘This was a traumatic experience for the victim, and we commend the bravery she has shown throughout the trial. Thanks to her courage and the swift actions of our officers, we were able to secure a conviction and ensure justice was served for this violent, sexually motivated crime. Tackling violence against women and girls is a key priority for Kent Police and we will use all of the powers available to us to prevent harm, support victims, and bring offenders like Amer to justice.’
