An Ashford local has been handed a £1,000 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) after an investigation linked them to waste dumped in Great Chart last November.

Following an anonymous tip-off and an interview under caution, the resident paid the fine in full. Ashford’s Environmental Enforcement Team is cracking down on illegal dumping, reminding residents that they have a legal duty of care for their waste. Even if people don’t dump it themselves, using an unlicensed “man with a van” can lead to prosecution and fines of up to £600.

To avoid being “clobbered” by similar penalties, always follow these steps:

  • Verify Licenses: Check whether someone is licensed to carry waste by calling the Environment Agency on 03708 506506 or visit their website.
  • Get Paperwork: Always demand a written receipt or transfer note detailing the waste and its destination.
  • Report It: Help the council by reporting fly-tipping incidents via the official “Report It” webpage
