MAIDSTONE, KENT — A major investigation into “appalling” environmental crime has resulted in three arrests and the seizure of a vehicle, as Maidstone Borough Council steps up its war on illegal dumping.

The crackdown follows a series of large-scale fly-tipping incidents across the district that have left taxpayers facing a massive bill for restoration.

A massive clean-up operation is currently underway, focusing on several high-priority sites. One of the most severe incidents occurred in Yelsted Lane, where the volume of waste is so significant that the removal costs are estimated to exceed £5,000.

“This kind of organised environmental crime causes damage to our countryside and places a huge financial burden on local authorities,” said Cllr Clive English, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environmental Services and Enforcement.

The breakthrough in the investigation came on Monday, 9 February when working in partnership with Kent Police, Maidstone Council officers executed a targeted operation that led to:

  • Three individuals arrested in connection with the dumping.
  • One vehicle seized and impounded by Borough Council officers.
  • Ongoing forensic evidence gathering at multiple sites.

“Don’t Mess with Maidstone”

This enforcement action is the latest win for the council’s Don’t Mess with Maidstone campaign. Launched last year, the initiative was designed to send a clear message: illegal dumping will not be tolerated, and the council will pursue criminal charges against anyone found damaging the borough.

Cllr English added, “This action demonstrates that we take this issue extremely seriously. We will not hesitate to take action against anyone who fly-tips in our borough.”
