Short Mat Bowls Club

The Bowls Club has been in existence since December 1986 and meets and plays every Monday and Thursday evening at the Spitfire Leisuredrome, Aerodrome Road, Hawkinge.

Up until about 4 years ago the Club played throughout the whole year but as a number of members also play outdoor bowls during the summer months, it was decided that the season would be from mid-September to mid-April each year.

Hawkinge, along with Dymchurch, Ealham, Hythe, Lyminge, Lympne, Newchurch, New Romney, Saltwood, Sandgate, Seeboard, and St.Marys Bay belong to the Shepway League. We play matches on a Home and Away basis every month from October to March inclusive.

Hawkinge also play in the South East Kent League which includes other clubs such as Hamstreet, Shadoxhurst, Mersham, Aldington, Rye etc.

Some of our members take part in the Kent County Competitions and our youngest member, who was 14 when he first joined with his father in March1998, was subsequently approached by a member of the County Committee and asked if he would play for the Kent Junior Team, which he did and still does.

Tournaments are held throughout the season at Dymchurch, Hythe and Lympne (at which Hawkinge takes part) with all monies raised going to various charities.

In 1994 and 1996 it fell to Hawkinge to organise and run a Mini-Marathon Tournament and on both occasions over £1,500 was raised for charity.
We have in-house Competitions and trophies are presented to the Winners and Runners-Up at our Annual Dinner which is held just before the end of our playing season.

We usually have a Beetle Drive and Raffle on our Christmas Social Evening.
Currently we have 28 members (of which only 10 come from Hawkinge/Densole).

We would welcome enquiries from potential new members - age is irrelevant so long as one can bend down and hold a bowl prior to delivery!

Annual subscription is £5 (£2.50 under 18) and £2 each Monday and Thursday, which includes tea and biscuits.

Casual wear is the norm on Club Nights but when playing in any competition it is necessary to wear grey below the waist and white above. It is always necessary to wear shoes/slippers that are flat and smooth-soled in order to avoid damaging the mats.

Anyone interested should contact Mrs. Wyn Jennings on 01303 - 893478 for any further information.
