A police officer from south-east Kent is being investigated over claims that he used a campaign targeting untaxed vehicles to buy himself an old car.

He is alleged to have paid £250 for an M-reg Ford Probe after it was seized in Kent's Operation Cubit crackdown.

The force confirmed one of its officers had been suspended pending the conclusion of an internal inquiry.

Operation Cubit is a joint initiative which involves the police, councils and the DVLA.

It enables untaxed vehicles to be removed from the streets which are then crushed into a cube if they are not claimed.
