But parish council project manager, Trevor Johns, stressed that this was only the beginning of the handover procedure and that work putting the finishing touches to the interior would be continuing.

He said: “We have made a start on the handover. The charitable trust, which will run the centre, is in place and we are able to respond to booking enquiries if people would like to get in touch.

And he praised contractors GSE Design and Build, and in particular senior project manager Nick Hamer, for all their hard work on the new building.

He said: “Nick has put his heart and soul into this place and it has his unique stamp all over it.

“I think we can all be proud that we now have one of the premium community halls in the area.

The trust is appealing for people to come forward and offer to help with the running of the new centre. Volunteers can get in touch via the parish council’s website on www.hawkinge.org.uk

Booking enquiries can be made on bookings@hawkinge.org.uk.
