Clifford Ayling the former GP who was jailed for indecently assaulting female patients has been released from prison.

He was struck off the medical register by the General Medical Council in June 2001.
Ayling, who was convicted in 2000 of indecent assault against patients, was freed on licence this week.

<FONT face=Arial>He had served less than three years of a four-year sentence.

He worked as a GP in the Cheriton area of Folkestone and also at hospitals across east Kent, including the gynaecological unit at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.

The Department of Health set up an inquiry last September into how Ayling's crimes had escaped detection for so long in an attempt to prevent the risk of future sexual abuse of patients.

It began in April and is expected to conclude soon.
