<FONT face=Arial><FONT size=2>Reports of unsolicited calls made by companies selling burglar alarm systems and fire safety equipment have been received by members of the public in the Sevenoaks area.

Past history has shown that such companies target their calls to elderly or vulnerable consumers and have been known to charge excessive sums of money to install smoke detectors and the like, which can be bought for a fraction of the price from local DIY stores.

It is important to remember that our Emergency Services never recommend or
approve any specific company and Kent Fire Brigade has not contracted any
company to make appointments with residents on their behalf.

The advice of the CSN is not to be pressured into agreeing anything on the
doorstep, better still, have the confidence to just say NO. However if you
do buy goods costing more than £35 you may be entitled to a cooling off
period. If you are and the company fails to give you notice of these rights,
then they may be committing a criminal offence.

Kent Trading Standards would like to hear of any instances where consumers
feel they have been subject to dubious sales techniques on 0845 3032500 or
by logging on to their website at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/kent.

The CSN has produced a booklet "Doorstep Sellers - Have the Confidence to
Say No" and copies can be ordered by calling 01233 652280 or downloaded
directly from the Trading Standards website.
