MORTUARY SITE PROVIDES CEMETERY WITH MORE SPACE

Extra space has been created at New Romney Cemetery for the interment of ashes.

Although the cemetery became full for any new burials in the summer of 2002, Shepway Council has identified an area where the old mortuary stood that can be used for the interment of ashes.

Cllr John Hughes, Cabinet member for Public Space and Safety, said the area was large enough to accommodate 208 single plots.

“Since the cemetery closed for burials we have had several requests for the interment of ashes. We looked to see if any more space could be created and carried out trial digs in the area where the old mortuary stood.

“I hope this news will be well received by the residents of New Romney who will now be able to have their loved ones placed to rest close to home. I am sure this will make visiting graves much easier and more convenient – especially for elderly relatives. “

An extension to New Romney cemetery is being pursued by the town council and could be ready in two years’ time.
