More than 1,000 young people are expected to attend the return of a major sporting event to the area on Saturday 5 June - when Passport to Sport 2004 bursts into action at Victoria Park in Deal.

The fantastic free fun day, aimed at 11-17 year-olds, will be up and running from 10am to 4pm and features an amazing range of free activities, displays and games, with the chance to try your hand, or foot at a wide variety of sports.

Attractions at the event include a skateboarding demonstration and competition, dance mats, gymnastics and acrobatics, a pool competition, a tug of war and giant games. There will also be the chance to take part in a variety of sports and activities including: Kwik Cricket, fencing, rowing, skipping, Box-a-cise, rugby, netball, tennis, football, chess, karate, and vouchers will be available for a free swim.

Sport coaches from a number of national bodies will be attending on the day and the Kent Sports Development Unit will be supporting the event, with Development Officers and coaches on hand to give expert advice. Local youth organisations have also been invited and will be present with display stands to promote their groups.

Passport 2 Sport 2004 is being organised by Dover District Council and Kent County Council Youth and Community, with support from Project DELTA's LEEEAPS scheme and Vista Leisure. The event was launched earlier this year when the Mayor of Deal, Cllr Mrs Sue Delling welcomed guests to a special event at Deal Town Hall. The event was first held in Deal to celebrate the Tercentenary of the town's Charter in 1999. It is hoped the 2004 event will be a 'pilot' for an annual event.

Kelly Grossmith, DDC Sports Development Officer said: "We are delighted to be working with our partners in the community to organise and support this major event. This will be a fantastic chance for young people everywhere to have a great day out and have a go at the amazing range of sporting and recreational activities."
