Local ratepayers will have to suffer a little longer after Shepway Council's recycling scheme has hit yet another setback.

News that Trio Group Engineering Ltd, the company which supplied the vehicles, have gone into administration will bring further delays to the recycling plan introduced last summer.

The vehicles were taken off the road in October because of a mechanical fault and concerns about safety. Trio had agreed to carry out modifications to the vehicles to enable them to be returned to service in February but this now appears to be unlikely.

A statement from the council said: "We are currently making enquiries about whether another company can carry out the adaptations to our recycling collection vehicles to enable them to be brought back into service.

"No information is currently available about what the costs to the council are likely to be."

Deputy Leader of Shepway District Council David Monk refuted the claims that Shepway residents would suffer. He said " We have moved heaven and earth to ensure the service continues uninterrupted. This is one of the council's highest priorities.

"People won't see any delays to the service except for operational matters such as the bad weather we had recently."
