HAWKINGE ACRISE AND PADDLESWORTH WI

One is ever hopeful that the beginning of July will be warm and sunny so that the annual garden party can be held in a garden and not in the village hall! How fortunate we were this year as we were blessed with just such weather.

Nora Cole kindly hosted the ladies in her lovely garden in Paddlesworth, it is situated on the top of a high ridge giving stunning views across the countryside and in the adjacent field a mare and her foal could be seen – quite a joyous sight. There was a treasure hunt, egg and spoon races and twelve anagrams to be unravelled. Of course just sitting in the garden and relaxing in such lovely surroundings was quite enough for some of the ladies.

Lots of gifts were found by the fortunate in the treasure hunt; Anne Wilson won the anagram competition and Janet Cripps was overall winner in the egg and spoon races. Barbara Pemble won the monthly competition for a vase of wild flowers. The afternoon tea was quite splendid and many thanks go to everyone who prepared such a sumptuous feast. All in all a very pleasurable afternoon.

A trip to visit St Paul’s cathedral has been arranged for Wednesday, 20th September and there are still places available. The day will consist of travel to London by coach, a guided tour of St Paul’s, lunch in the 16th century restaurant “Ye Olde Cheshire Cheeseâ€? (this is a set lunch of their famous Steak and Kidney pudding, lemon meringue pie and coffee) and a little free time. The cost for this is £35.30 but if concessions apply £33.80 (OAPs). If you are interested in joining us on this trip please contact Wendy Bell on 01303 893858.

There is to be a member’s afternoon in August, so if you have the afternoon free and are curious about what we get up to in the WI please come along, this meeting is to be held on Tuesday, 1st August starting at 2pm in Hawkinge village hall. In the meantime if you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact Wendy Bell on 01303 893858 or myself on 01303 891734.
