Police are treating the cutting down of a 100-year-old oak tree on The Leas escarpment in Folkestone as criminal damage.

The 50 foot evergreen oak was one of the largest trees on the Leas escarpment.

Chris McCreedy, Shepway District Council’s Grounds maintenance manager said: “This is not casual vandalism.

This has been planned and someone must have seen or heard this happening. It looks as if a chainsaw has been used to cut down the multiple stem trunks of the tree."

Shepway District Council is working with the police to appeal for witnesses.
