Five storey block of flats evacuated after big fire in Thanet

A British Red Cross support unit and Kent Fire and Rescue Service's volunteer response team were called to assists residents after a blaze at a block of flats in Thanet this morning.



Firefighters were called to the fire at a first-floor flat in a five-storey building in McKinlay Court, Birchington shortly before 6.00am today 8 February.


Four fire engines attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat and brought the fire under control.


All the flats were evacuated and one elderly resident was led to safety from a neighbouring property. Six residents required the attention of SECAmb after breathing in smoke.


The fire caused severe damage to one flat and smoke damage to two other properties.


The cause is not yet known.
