Cornelia Parker, the sculptor who produced the Folkestone Mermaid overlooking Sunny Sands beach in Folkestone has been appointed the official artist for the 2017 general election.

The Mermaid was created for the Folkestone Triennial in 2011.

It was Folkestone's version of the Danish Little Mermaid, one of the popular tourist attractions in Copenhagen.

Parker chose Georgina Baker, mother of two and Folkestone born and bred to model for the sculpture but unlike the idealised Copenhagen version, this was to be a life-size, life-cast sculpture, celebrating the local and the everyday.

But the mermaid did not meet with universal approval.

The Folkestone Urban Sirens targeting Cornelia Parker's sculpture

An anonymous group of local women  known as the Folkestone Urban Sirens targeted the Sunny Sands mermaid insisting the statue could not be a mermaid without a tail.

They admitted their protest, which involved dressing the sculpture, was merely a prank, but claimed they were highlighting their disappointment that it was without the necessary fish tail.
