The long awaited return of a 'proper' museum facility for Folkestone and Shepway is nearing completion and the Grand Opening event at the Town Hall in Guildhall Street is taking place at the end of the month.

The event, 'How will you remember Folkestone?' is being held over the Spring Bank Holiday on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th May.

Large banners have been erected in the town centre precinct and posters are being distributed to local shops and businesses, as well as further afield around East Kent, ahead of the opening.

The project, which cost £1.95 million via a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and started last August, will be open from 10am to 3pm on both days of the weekend.

Visitors will be able to view a large selection of the town's history on the ground floor and lower ground floors based on five main themes: Ancient, Frontline, Natural, Fashion and Maritime.

Indeed, so large is the collection that the exhibits will be on rotation at regular intervals along with 'pop-up' exhibitions in the foyer area.

The lower ground floor will also be used to host special educational events.

The whole area has been refurbished and visitors can to access the museum both from the main front door of the town hall and from the rear of the building in Market Place which has just seen the paving stones and steps cleaned following the refurbishment of the rear and sides of the building.

The collections, for children and adults alike, will also feature a number of interactive displays about the area's history.

The opening weekend will allow people to meet characters from local history, dig for fossils and see the bug man and his hand held creepy-crawlies.

Finally, the Silver Screen cinema facility remains in place on the upper floors of the building and is now fully accessible by lift. The small screen two doubles as the new town council chamber.
