Canterbury man jailed for 360 days over string of offences including 22 of shoplifting

A Canterbury man has been jailed for 360 days over string of offences including 22 of shoplifting across east Kent.

 

 

Mark Lees was sentenced on 2 May 2017 at Thanet Magistrates’ Court.

He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, making off without payment and 22 counts of shoplifting. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of common assault but was convicted of the offences by magistrates.

On 31 December 2016 the 32-year-old, of Old Park Avenue, Canterbury, stole a television and a sound bar speaker worth £278 from a supermarket in Sturry Road, Canterbury.

On 1 January 2017 he stole a hoover and a sound bar speaker worth £180 from a supermarket in Kingsmead, Canterbury.

On 7 January 2017 he made off without paying a taxi fare worth £41 in Querns Road, Canterbury. He also stole men’s clothing worth an unknown amount from a shop in Stour Crescent, Canterbury.

On 8 January 2017 he stole three fragrances worth £288 from a shop in Guildhall Street, Canterbury.

On 9 January 2017 he stole two perfume gift sets worth £127.50 from a shop in Gravel Walk, Canterbury.

On 11 January 2017 he assaulted a man and stole two sound bar speakers worth £118 from a supermarket in Sturry Road, Canterbury.

On 12 January 2017 he stole bags worth an unknown amount from a shop in Stour Crescent, Canterbury. He also stole two sound bars and two speakers worth £140 from a shop in Marshwood Close, Canterbury.

On 13 January 2017 he stole a hoover worth £70 and a hoover worth £60 from two shops in Marshwood Close.

On 20 January 2017 he stole baby’s clothing worth £100 from a shop in Stour Crescent, Canterbury.

On 21 January 2017 he stole alcohol worth £84 from a supermarket in Kingsmead Road, Canterbury.

On 30 January 2017 he drove a Peugeot 207 in Romney Marsh Road, Ashford, while disqualified and with no insurance. He also stole four fragrances worth £184.50 and assaulted a woman at a shop in Ten Perch Road, Canterbury.

On 28 February 2017 he stole toys and baby items worth £164.95 from a shop in Marshwood Close, Canterbury.

On 4 March 2017 he stole two bottles of cognac worth £57 from a supermarket in St George’s Centre, Canterbury.

On 7 March 2017 he stole two bomber jackets worth £189.98 from a shop in St Margaret’s Street, Canterbury.

On 10 March 2017 he stole a ladies denim jacket worth £79.99 from the same shop.

On 13 March 2017 he stole two bottles of cognac worth £54 from a supermarket in Sturry Road, Canterbury.

On 19 March 2017 he stole three bottles of cognac worth £96 from the same supermarket in St George’s Centre. He also stole two bottles of whisky worth £41.99 from a shop in St Dunstan’s Street, Canterbury.

On 20 March 2017 he stole two bottles of vodka worth £79.98 from the same shop in St Dunstan’s Street.

On 22 March 2017 he stole three bottles of vodka worth £113.90 from a supermarket in Ten Perch Road, Canterbury.

Magistrates sentenced Lees to 360 days in prison. He must also pay £300 compensation.
