Council told to make further savings

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"><FONT size=2><FONT color=black>It was o­ne of two district councils capped by Local Government Minister, Nick Raynsford, o­n Thursday (29 April). Four unitary authorities, five fire authorities and three police authorities have also been told to reduce their spending.

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"><FONT size=2><FONT color=black>The announcement means that Shepway Council has to limit its spending for the 2004/05 year to £15, 494,000 – or two per cent above last year. To meet the target the council must find a further £600,000 in savings.

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"><FONT size=2><FONT color=black>This will cut Shepway’s element of the current council tax for an average band D property from 96p to 66p a week – reducing the overall ‘headline’ figure from 9.7 per cent to 8.3 per cent.

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"><FONT size=2><FONT color=black>The cost of sending out new bills to all 44,000 homes in the district will cost in the region of £100,000 – an additional burden o­n top of the enforced savings.

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"><FONT size=2><FONT color=black>Council Leader, Cllr Mrs Linda Cufley, said the council had already made two submissions to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister setting out reasons for this year’s council tax increase and would now appeal against the capping decision.

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; TEXT-ALIGN: justify"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'"><FONT size=2><FONT color=black>“The consequences having to reduce our original council tax increase by the closure of public toilets, reductions in highway verge cutting and the axing of tourism promotion – cuts we did not want to make – have caused more protests than the original level of council tax.
