Gurkha Battalion returns to Shorncliffe after six month deployment in Afghanistan

Following a gruelling six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan, some 130 members of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles arrived back at the Sir John Moore Barracks in Shorncliffe on Sunday (7 November).

Friends and families welcomed them home after their operations in Helmand province.

The battalion lost four of its members in Afghanistan during the deployment.

Rifleman Suraj Gurung was killed in an explosion while on patrol in Nahr-e Saraj on 2 October, Major James Joshua Bowman, Lieutenant Neal Turkington and Corporal Arjun Purja Pun were killed by a rogue Afghan soldier on 13 July.
