Santa will be arriving in Hythe with a family of reindeer for the towns traditional Christmas shopping extravaganza.

There will be music, entertainment and ‘happenings’ along the High Street on Friday, December 7 and a family of reindeer which can be petted by children.

Hythe Chamber of Commerce & Tourism (HCCT) is organising the event and promises that with more shops, restaurants and other businesses taking part it will be ‘the best yet’.

Chairman Joanna Ames said that the event had two aims - to provide residents and visitors of all ages with an enjoyable evening and also to promote Hythe as a friendly, value-for-money place to shop and spend leisure time. “This year we are welcoming shoppers with a brand-new lighting and decorations scheme, especially designed for the High Street, which will add to the festive mood created by displays in shop and other windows.

“Seasonal refreshment will be offered by a number of shops, restaurants and cafes and there will also be stalls selling gingerbread, crepes and handicrafts. Music and family fun entertainment will include a magician, Punch and Judy, a swing singer and the Salvation Army Band and Choir. A family of reindeer will be penned in a straw-filled enclosure in the town square and during the evening Father Christmas will greet shoppers from a sleigh pulled by the male animal. An attraction for younger visitors will be a fire engine parked in Bank Street.

“We want the event - from 6pm to 9pm - to be a something-for-everybody party occasion. To make it easy for people to get around, application has been made to Shepway District Council for the High Street to be closed to traffic from 5pm to 10pm”.

Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway is again offering Marsh residents free return trips to Hythe for Christmas shopping.

The special trains will run on Saturdays, December 1, 8, 15 and 22 on the service leaving New Romney at 9.50 and calling at St Mary’s Bay (9.58) and Dymchurch (10.05) and arriving at Hythe at 10.25.

Departure time for the return journey, calling at the same stations, is 5.15.
