This year National Mills Weekend is taking place over the weekend of 13-14 May, when hundreds of windmills and watermills across Kent and the UK will open their doors to visitors in an annual celebration of Britain’s mills and milling heritage.

This year’s theme, Engineers and Engineering, will celebrate the engineers and millwrights who built our country’s mills and their machinery, and the millwrights of today who continue this ancient craft. Britain has some of the richest milling heritage in the world and this is an opportunity to explore it through open days and special events being held over the weekend.

Details of participating mills can be found at .

Mill visits offer a fun day out for the whole family, whether you’re hooked on heritage, mad about machines, into baking or a kid who loves clambering about.

The SPAB Mills Section launched the event in 1984. The SPAB (the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) is Britain’s oldest heritage charity.

SPAB supporter Kevin McCloud says: “If you have ever wondered what became of our wind and watermills, then ‘National Mills Weekend’ is for you. All across Britain some 320 mills will open their doors and share the magic of their past with Joe Public. This is a great opportunity to revisit part of our cultural heritage, support its conservation and promotion to a wider audience, and see, on occasion, mills continuing to provide a useful functioning role.”

National Mills Weekend is a fantastic annual event and its popularity grows. Last year over 320 mills took part, with an estimated total of 40,000 visits over the weekend.
