First foot forward for Folkestone firms' funding

Eighteen businesses in Folkestone have taken the first steps to secure funding to help them grow and create more jobs.

Firms in east and central Folkestone which employ fewer than 250 people were invited to apply for grants available through Folkestone Community Works programme, which is managed by Folkestone & Hythe District Council.

Up to £7,500 can be awarded to businesses to improve productivity and create jobs, with up to £20,000 on the table for exceptional cases.

The 18 projects are now being assessed and decisions will be taken in the New Year by the Folkestone Local Action Group (LAG) made up local business and community leaders, and the council’s Local Decision Panel.

LAG chairman, Terry Cooke-Davies, said he was pleased with the response from local businesses.

“I look forward to reviewing their projects in more detail with my colleagues. We want to see east and central Folkestone share the economic success being enjoyed by other parts of our town and district. A key element of this is getting more and more local people back into work and for that we need successful and ambitious local businesses.”

The names of successful businesses will be released after the final endorsement.

The grants to businesses is the second call from the Folkestone Community Works programme and aims to support business growth and boost jobs in the eastern and central parts of Folkestone. Six projects have  already been awarded £700,000 from the first round.
European funding of £2.5m for the programme, which will run until 2020, was secured by the council in 2017. Match funding has boosted this to more than £4million.
