A Herne Bay man found guilty of raping a young girl will serve sixteen years in prison and a further four on an extended licence.

Howard Hammond-Edgar subjected the victim to serious abuse, some of which took place more than five years ago.

Following his arrest officers uncovered more than 2,500 indecent images and videos stored across 13 separate pieces of hardware, most of which were encrypted.

The 65-year-old, formerly of Herne Bay, was found guilty of two counts of rape and admitted a further seven sexual offences committed against the victim. He also admitted six counts of making an indecent photograph.

He was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Friday 29 November 2019.

Detective Inspector Sheena Barrell, a senior investigating officer from Kent Police, said: ‘Hammond-Edgar committed vile crimes against a young girl.

‘Despite her age, she displayed courage beyond her years to speak out against a man who subjected her to horrendous abuse. I am very pleased that Hammond-Edgar has received the justice he deserves.

‘I hope this result encourages other victims of unreported sexual abuse to get in contact with us so we can support and pursue justice for them.’
