A lock knife has been seized from a suspected shoplifter following a stop and search in the centre of Maidstone.

The weapon was located by patrols as part of an ongoing campaign by Kent Police to tackle knife crime.

Officers approached a man who was seen entering Brenchley Gardens shortly after 12pm on Tuesday 14 May 2019. He was searched and a knife was found inside a jacket pocket.

Enquiries led to him also being identified as a suspect for a number of thefts from stores in the town centre.

The man, aged 23, from Maidstone was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife in a public place and theft offences. He was later released, pending further investigation.

This latest arrest forms part of an ongoing crackdown on knife crime across the county.

Kent Police works in partnership with other law enforcement agencies, such as British Transport Police and neighbouring forces, to detect and disrupt those believed to be carrying weapons and who may be linked to associated offences, such as supplying drugs.
