The hotel room assault which left a man with serious facial injuries has resulted in the offender receiving a 12 year extended sentence.

27-year-old Stephen Campbell of no fixed address, admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted robbery and was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Thursday 13 February 2020.

The sentence comprises nine years in custody and three years on an extended licence.

The court heard the offender and the victim were staying in nearby rooms at a hotel in Marine Parade.

The pair first met on 19 July when they made conversation outside the venue’s main entrance while the victim smoked a cigarette.

They then went to the victim’s room, where Campbell was given £20 after saying he was short on money and was due to be paid the next day.

Campbell returned to the room several hours later and asked for an additional £10, which the victim declined to hand over. The offender then struck the victim several times across the face before he was left drifting out of consciousness.

The following morning the victim woke to find he had been seriously assaulted and alerted hotel staff. He was then taken to a local hospital to receive treatment to numerous facial injuries.

Campbell, who was not at the scene when officers arrived, was promptly identified as the offender and detained on the same day.

Police Constable Sam Minichiello, Kent Police’s investigating officer for the case, said: ‘The victim of this assault had earlier given Campbell money as a gesture of goodwill and his kindness was repaid with excessive and unprovoked violence.

‘Campbell’s willingness to show such force shows him to be an extremely volatile and dangerous offender and I am pleased we have secured justice for the victim.’
