Cash boost for staff....25 April 2002

Contributed by localrags on Nov 06, 2002 - 03:20 PM

STAFF at Hawkinge Primary School are celebrating after being awarded £7,500 by the Department of Education.

The cash bonus, which will be distributed among all staff, is in recognition of their hard work in raising standards at the school following a less than favourable Ofsted report three years ago.

Then the school was identified as having "serious weaknesses", but in last year’s visit inspectors reported there were definite signs of improvement.

Head teacher Jacqui Watson said: "This is a reward to all staff in recognition of their hard work improving standards throughout the school."

Head attacks " vociferous minority seeking to divide this community"....27 April 2002

Contributed by localrags on Nov 06, 2002 - 03:13 PM

Head teacher at the Churchill School Jennie Carter has made a scathing attack on a minority of villagers present at the Annual Parish Council meeting on Wednesday.

Writing in the school newsletter the Churchill Times she said:

" Those of us present were appalled by the vociferous minority seeking to divide this community.Â

"If anything, the scare mongering about the two schools not working together has served to bring Jacquie Watson, Head of Hawkinge School, and I even closer together.Â

We are determined that the children of this village shall not grow up to adopt this “half-empty view of life. Nor shall they learn spiteful talk that breeds a culture of suspicion and animosity".

Dungeness nuclear train crashes into lorry....11 June 2002

Contributed by localrags on Nov 06, 2002 - 03:11 PM

A goods train bound for the Dungeness Nuclear Power Station has crashed into a lorry at the Brookland level crossing on Romney Marsh

The train was carrying an empty nuclear flask and the area has been sealed off whilst experts assess the damage.

The collision on the A259 happened shortly after 8.30am today (11/6/02). The train was not derailed and no one was injured.

Nuclear Flasks weigh 50 tons and are tested rigorously. They are constructed to withstand the impact of a high speed train accident.

It is understood that the collision was at low speed and there was only superficial damage to the locomotive and the lorry
