Tom Rogers or Rodgers 24/10/02

I am trying to locate an old school chum called who I understand lived in the Swingfield area of Folkestone in the 40's.

He emigrated to Australia with his family in 1949 or 1950 and would be aged 66.

If any reader has any information I would be delighted to receive it.

The school was the Canterbury Technical School and for the last seven years the class has met up.Tom Rogers is the last class member to be located.

Sgt Patrick Hayes 7/2/02

I am trying to trace the history of my late uncle Sgt Patrick Hayes of 65 Squadron RAF.

He was shot down and killed near Folkestone while flying a Spitfire on convoy protection duties on the 7th July 1940.

Can anyone suggest any newspaper archives or other research material?

Michael Taylor

More Sgt Patrick Hayes

I have managed to find out quite a lot, for instance he was flying a Spitfire N3129 which was the 400th Spitfire produced. Two other pilots were killed in the same encounter, P/O NJ Brisbane and P/O GV Proudman.

All three pilots were based at RAF Hornchurch as part of 65 'East India' Squadron. They were on convoy patrol between dover and Dungeness when they were 'bounced' at 2015/2050 hours by ME 109 fighters from Luftwaffe unit JG.27 on an 'area sweep'.

What I have never been able to establish is whether my uncles aircraft crashed into land or sea. The only accounts available state he was lost 'near Folkestone' which is rather ambiguous. In the case of falling to sea,

bodies must have been washed ashore, who would account for these and what efforts did the authorities make at the time to identify remains?

It has occurred to me that the best eye witness accounts would be the reports of the German pilots. If you can point me in the right direction to follow up that line of enquiry I would be most grateful. I speak no German.

My uncle's hobby was photography and I am in possession of his album of photographs which chart his pre war training, through enlistment into the RAF up to the outbreak of hostilities (where the codes on the aircraft change to a wartime footing) I feel sure these photographs would be of interest to someone, hopefully someone who would be able to guide my own research.

Many thanks again for your prompt reply and assistance

Regards...Michael Taylor.

Ms J Dabnor 9/8/01

My name is Jaclyn Dabnor, and I'm writing you in hopes that you could help me with some research that I'm trying to do.

For years, I've been interested in researching my family name and where it comes from, only to hit brick walls whenever I turn a corner. Living in the United States is not helping my situation either.

I did happen across a search engine that turned up a 'Ms J Dabnor' who is Headmistress for Hawkinge Primary School in Kent-and that's about the extent. Most of the information I'm finding on the net is courtesy of my father-whom I don't need to do any research on at all!

I was wondering where I could go to find information on my family history from the other side of the duck pond. I would even like to get an email address where I could reach Ms Dabnor at the Hawkinge Primary School. Every little tidbit of history helps!

Thanks so much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.

James Kilty 15/3/01

I am beginning to trace my ancestors and would be pleased to know of any Kilty/Kelty connections in your area.

My great grandfather, James Kilty, came from Sligo in Ireland and settled in Gravesend at the end of the 19th century. I believe that at least one of his children moved to east Kent but have no idea where. To my knowledge there are no Kiltys left in the Gravesend area but there may be some towards the east. I would welcome any help, however small.

Thank you.
