A ‘Mayday’ call from a sailing yacht aground in the vicinity of ‘The Spile’ bank off the Isle of Sheppey saw the Whitstable Atlantic 85 lifeboat launch to assist on Saturday morning.

The lifeboat crew located the 10-metre craft around 6-miles north west of Whitstable.

It had been refloated but was making little headway on its intended course around the north side of Sheppey.

However, the skipper of the yacht confirmed with the lifeboat crew that he no longer required any assistance and would now head for the Harty Ferry in The Swale.

Sheppey Coastguard Rescue Team continued to keep the craft under observation.
