First aid skills learnt by two police officers have helped to save the life of a motorcyclist near Sittingbourne.
PCs Alex Grace and Mark McPhee, of the Local Policing Team in Swale, responded to a collision reported on Sheppey Way, Bobbing, which involved a motorcyclist and a flatbed truck.
The officers arrived at the scene where they found the motorcyclist, screaming in pain and trapped under the vehicle.
Members of the public raised the rear of the truck which allowed the officers to go under the rear axles to pull the rider from underneath.
Panic at the scene made it difficult for officers but they were able to calm the situation quickly and provide first aid. The rider, a man in his early 20s, was struggling to breathe so PC Grace removed his helmet, cleared his airway and provided lifesaving treatment while PC McPhee assisted.
South East Coast Ambulance Service arrived a short time later and took over before the injured rider was flown to a London hospital for treatment. The rider has since made a full recovery following the incident on 30 November 2021.
Chief Inspector Joel Mitchell, Kent Police’s District Commander for Swale said: ‘Upon arriving at the scene the senior paramedic said that the actions of the two officers undoubtedly saved the life of the rider.‘Their quick thinking and flawless teamwork helped a member of the public when they were in need of help the most. They should be very proud of themselves.’
