Ashford Borough Council has received official confirmation this week from the Cabinet Office giving approval to rename Discovery Park as ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Park’.

The renaming follows a lengthy process to satisfy the strict requirements for such naming, which began back in November 2021.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Park will be for all Ashford residents to enjoy. At 142 hectares, (351 acres) the park will link Chilmington Green to Court Lodge and the wider area with upgraded footways and cycleways.

It will be a mix of formal, landscaped areas for people and protected habitats for wildlife with the formal areas to include a large sports facility with indoor and outdoor play pitches.

The planning of the park is being led by the Council with developers supporting the building of sports facilities as the development proceeds.

Cllr Gerry Clarkson, Leader of Ashford Borough Council, said: “It is pleasing to note that this new park will reflect the historic nature of this milestone of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

“I am grateful to officers in our tourism team who were instrumental in providing the historical background information that assisted me to make such a strong case to the Cabinet Office.”
