Maidstone Museum

Maidstone Museum is inviting families to come along and take part in the Wild Escape, the UK’s largest ever museum project, to be held on Earth Day 22 April 2023.

The free family day out at Maidstone Museum will inspire children and adults with its Natural History Collection when they can create an animal found in a Kent habitat to be included on a local panoramic landscape.

The event is being held at Maidstone Museum on Saturday 22 April between 10am and 3pm when everyone can create a 2D artwork. The Museum will share photographs of the finished creations with ArtUK, the organisation behind Earth Day.

Maidstone Museum is one of over 500 museums taking part in The Wild Escape, produced by Art Fund. Mark Green, Director of Finance, Resources & Business Improvement at Maidstone Borough Council said: “The Wild Escape is a major new project led by Art Fund uniting hundreds of museums with schools and families in a celebration of UK wildlife and creativity.”

Taking place between January and July 2023, the project invites children to find a favourite animal in their local museum and create an artwork imagining its journey to a natural habitat. Jenny Waldman, Director, Art Fund, added: “514 museums all around the UK have come together to deliver #TheWildEscape and show the power museums have to inspire children and young people to co-create an artwork to help animals, birds and insects escape the museums and return to their natural habitat. The young people develop their creative skills and their understanding of the importance of our wildlife and the future biodiversity of our Wild Isles.”

The Wild Escape is the largest ever collaboration between UK museums and is inspired by Wild Isles, a landmark BBC series exploring the flora and fauna of the UK.

One of Maidstone Borough Council’s priorities is a Thriving Place and this event at the Museum reflects that.  Find out more about Maidstone Museum by visiting the website:  https://museum.maidstone.gov.uk/
