Kevin Mills, Leader of Dover District Council has expressed his shock and anger at today’s announcement by Pfizer that it is consulting on 500 job losses at Discovery Park in Sandwich.

Cllr Mills said:

“Pfizer has failed to engage in any way with Dover District Council ahead of this decision. Given the scale of the potential job losses, I am deeply shocked and angry at today’s announcement.

“We’ll do whatever we can to support those affected by this appalling decision.

“Once again, it’s hard-working people who are sacrificed with hundreds of local families facing an uncertain and worrying time in the lead up to Christmas.

“It’s a double whammy for the Dover district following on from last year’s outrageous treatment of 800 local seafarers by P&O Ferries.

“The effect locally and in the wider Kent economy of all these job losses will be profound.

“The Government need to urgently intervene with targeted support for the Dover district where we already have some of the highest levels of deprivation in the south east.”
