Artist’s impression for the Dover Beacon project, supplied by Lee Evans Partnership

Residents, businesses and anyone with an interest are invited to view and comment on new design proposals for the Dover Beacon project in a second round of public engagement ahead of a full planning application in 2024.

This follows on from the initial consultation work that took place in February 2023.

The Dover Beacon project is set to deliver:

  • A creative centre and underpass improvements with £3.2m of funding from the Future High Street Fund, together with a £1.7m commitment from Dover District Council’s (DDC) Town Centre Regeneration Fund
  • An education campus, business start-up centre, riverside public open space and an expansion of Dover Click2Cycle bike hire with £18.1m funding awarded from the Levelling Up Fund, together with £1.8m from DDC.

The Dover Beacon will be visible from every side with the building carefully designed to enable good all-round views of Dover. Tenants have already been secured for the education campus (East Kent College Group) and business start-up centre (East Kent Spatial Development Company).

DDC has launched a prospectus for the tenancy of the creative centre. The creative centre comprising of 778sqm gross internal floor area is being designed to deliver flexible, multi-purpose spaces that could provide space for a gallery, or artistic studio/workshop to the successful tenant.

The drop-in event will take place at EKC Dover College, Maison Dieu Road, Dover CT16 1DH on Thursday 23 November from 2.30pm to 7pm. DDC officers will be in attendance, together with the project’s architects.

Visitors to the drop-in event will be able to comment on design proposals and will also be asked for their views on options for the refurbishment of the underpass.

If you cannot attend this session, the proposals will also be shared on the Council’s website accompanied by a short survey for residents to share their views.

The redevelopment of the site in Bench Street is expected to deliver over £90 million of economic benefits to the town.
