A bedroom fire in Margate, which broke out just before midnight on Monday (13 November) is believed to have started accidentally after a hairdryer was left on a bed while it was still hot and caused a pile of clothes to catch alight.

Two fire engines were rushed to a flat in Zion Place, where crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire with hoses.

Firefighters used a smoke curtain to stop the flames from spreading and cleared the property of smoke with a high-pressured fan.

One person was treated by SECAmb paramedics as a precaution after inhaling smoke.

It’s believed the clothes were accidentally put on top of the hairdryer while it was still hot after being used, which caused them to catch fire.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service are warning the public that appliances such as hairdryers and straighteners should be unplugged at the mains and allowed to cool on a non-flammable surface once they have been used.

Also, ensure there is a working smoke alarm on each floor of your property.
