Two brothers, who were from Gravesend have been sentenced to a combined total of 25 years in prison for the rape of a vulnerable child. The crimes were committed in the early 1990s, but an investigation was launched in 2021 after the victim came forward.

Girdaware Basra, 68, of Gravesend, and Onkar Basra, 57, of Rugby, Warwickshire, were charged with rape and unlawful sexual intercourse. Girdaware Basra faced an additional charge of indecent assault. Both men denied the charges but were found guilty following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

On Friday, December 6, 2024, Girdaware Basra was sentenced to 14-years in prison, while Onkar Basra received an 11-year sentence.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Caroline Morton, said:

‘These lengthy sentences reflect the gravity of the crimes carried out by both brothers. Their victim lived with the memory of their crimes for many years before feeling able to come forward to let us know.

‘Reliving her ordeal during the trial has been difficult for the victim and I wish to commend her immense courage. I hope the sentences offer her some closure.

‘Kent Police will always thoroughly investigate allegations of sexual offences, no matter when they took place. I want to encourage anyone who has been a victim to contact us. We will handle your case sensitively and you will be supported throughout.’
