Lucie Rudd fundraising Image: East Kent Hospitals Charity

A wave of determination is set to hit the streets of Manchester next month, as East Kent Hospitals’ very own Lucie Rudd laces up her running shoes for a cause close to her heart.

This dedicated consultant nurse, joint clinical lead for end-of-life care, will be tackling the formidable Manchester Marathon on Sunday, April 27th, all in the name of raising vital funds for the East Kent Hospitals Charity.

Lucie, a powerhouse of compassion and resilience, is no stranger to going the extra mile for her patients. With a commendable £250 already in her fundraising coffers, she’s setting her sights even higher, aiming to bolster the resources available for those receiving end-of-life care within the hospital’s walls.

“It’s been 14 years and two children since I last ran a marathon,” Lucie quipped, “and let’s just say my body feels a century older!” However, the demanding training regime, juggled alongside a full-time career and the joys of raising a 10 and 5-year-old, is fueled by a profound purpose.

“Our palliative and end-of-life care wards are sanctuaries for individuals in their final stages, and for their loved ones,” Lucie explained. “As a consultant nurse, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible difference our team makes. To provide care that truly sees the person, not just the patient, is an absolute privilege.”

The funds raised will directly support crucial enhancements to the wards, transforming them into tranquil and comforting environments. Think vibrant art and murals, cozy recliner beds for family members, and entertainment systems to provide a sense of normality during challenging times. Even beloved pets are sometimes accommodated, allowing for precious final moments.

Furthermore, Lucie’s efforts will contribute to the cherished “3 Wishes Project,” a heartwarming initiative that grants patients’ final wishes, celebrating their individuality and creating lasting, meaningful memories for their families. From simple pleasures to extraordinary requests, these wishes provide comfort and solace during the most delicate of times.

So, East Kent, let’s rally behind Lucie as she pounds the pavements of Manchester! Every step she takes is a step towards providing dignity, comfort, and compassion for those in their final journey.
