The Dover District Council (DDC) honoured its local environmental and community champions at the annual Recognising Environmental and Community Heroes (REACH) Awards ceremony on Saturday, June 14, held in the Billiards Room at Kearsney Abbey.
DDC Chairman, Cllr Susan Beer, presented the awards to individuals and groups dedicated to improving the district’s environment and fostering community spirit. The awards are supported by Eco Green Communities, providing biodegradable dog waste bags in local green spaces.

The awards were split into four categories, recognizing diverse efforts across the district. Judges looked for clear passion and consistent dedication to making a positive difference.
- Community Project of the Year:Dover Swap Shop
- Recognized for its volunteer-led initiative reducing waste and supporting families by facilitating the exchange of children’s clothes, toys, and books. Founded in 2018 by Lizzie Holt, it addresses both sustainability and social wellbeing, especially amid rising living costs.
- Green Organisation of the Year:Temple Ewell CEP School
- Hailed for its school-wide commitment to climate education and sustainability. Pupils lead projects such as building bug hotels, creating marine pollution sculptures from recycled materials, curating environmental libraries, and engaging with global farming and water conservation through innovative curriculum days.
- Litter Picker of the Year (over 18):Shane Lamoon
- Honored for years of consistent litter picking and cleanup efforts in the Tower Hamlets area, particularly around the children’s play and football areas in Northbourne Avenue.
- Junior Litter Picker of the Year (under 18):Florence Warburton
- Lauded for her dedication to keeping Ash village litter-free and inspiring her community, ensuring the village remains clean and safe for wildlife.
In presenting the awards, Cllr Susan Beer praised the winners, stating,
“It has been an honour to present awards this year to our environmental and community heroes. The entries were judged on inspiration, achievement, and environmental/community impact.”
She also acknowledged all local volunteers, groups, schools, and businesses for their efforts in making the district “a cleaner, greener, and better place to live.”
