It’s impossible to talk about the vibrant history of the Hythe Salvation Army without putting Richard Carroll front and centre! For nearly five decades, Richard, who has been the heartbeat of the local Corps serving with incredible energy as the Bandmaster, has now called it a day.

His legendary leadership has turned the Hythe Salvation Army Band into a local treasure, and his deep roots in the prestigious International Staff Band mean he brings world-class musical passion right to the streets of Kent.

Whether he’s conducting a grand concert at the town hall or acting as the Corps Sergeant Major to keep the spiritual mission on track, Richard’s cheerful presence is a staple of the community.

The story of the Hythe branch itself is just as spirited as its leadership. It all kicked off back in 1895 thanks to the relentless enthusiasm of Wright Griggs, a local fisherman and lifeboat hero known as the “Father of the Lifeboat.” After seeing the impact of the Salvation Army elsewhere, he made it his mission to bring that same light to Hythe. What started as a small outpost of the Folkestone group quickly blossomed into its own powerhouse of faith and music by 1896, eventually finding its long-term home on Portland Road.

Today, that same legacy of service is alive and well! Under the guidance of the Carroll family—including Wesley and Shauna—the Hythe Salvation Army is a buzzing hub of activity. From their lively Christmas celebrations that drew the whole town together to the vital work of their local food bank and toddler groups, they’ve managed to keep a century-old tradition feeling fresh, modern, and deeply connected to the people they serve. It’s a wonderful example of how a dedicated family and a historic institution can work hand-in-hand to keep a town’s spirit soaring.
