GILLINGHAM, Medway — Members of the public are being urged to close their windows and doors following a significant fire at a derelict building in Gillingham this afternoon.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service dispatched six fire engines and a height vehicle to the scene on Pier Approach Road after the alarm was raised at 5:35 pm on Saturday. Crews are currently using main jets to tackle the flames, which have sent large plumes of smoke into the surrounding area.

Firefighters have advised anyone living, working, or travelling near Pier Approach Road to keep all doors and windows firmly shut as a safety precaution against the smoke. Local residents are also being asked to share this urgent safety advice with nearby family members, friends, and neighbours who may be affected by the incident but do not have access to internet updates.
