MEDWAY – A person was passed into the care of paramedics on Saturday evening after a vehicle caught fire on the hard shoulder of the M2.
The Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was alerted to the incident at 18:21 on Saturday, 24 January 2026. The blaze occurred on the stretch of motorway between Junction 3 (Chatham) and Junction 4 (Gillingham), in close proximity to the Medway services.
Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle well-alight on the hard shoulder. Firefighters utilized breathing apparatus and high-pressure hose reel jets to combat the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding embankment. It’s reported one person involved in the incident was treated at the scene before being handed over to the care of SECAmb paramedics. The extent of their injuries has not yet been confirmed.
National Highways officers assisted with traffic management while fire crews worked to make the area safe. The incident was brought under control and concluded by 19:08, though some residual delays remained in the area as the vehicle awaited recovery. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation.
