Folkestone Harbour and the Harbour Arm remain in lockdown following a devastating overnight fire at the Grand Burstin Hotel, which was rapidly fanned by gale-force winds.
According to reports, the blaze broke out at around 1:20 am. and strong coastal gusts caused heavy smoke to billow across the harbour towards Copt Point, prompting a massive emergency response.
Firefighters are continuing to damp down remaining hotspots at the far end of the property near the ballroom, while a strict security cordon keeps nearby residents and hotel guests from returning to their properties.
The widespread closures have led to the cancellation of local events, including the opening day of the Oktoberfest German Beer Festival at the Harbour Arm, with no confirmation yet on Sunday operations. Meanwhile, coaches have been dispatched to Tontine Street to evacuate holidaymakers. While primary thoroughfares such as Tontine Street and Tram Road remain open to general traffic, local bus services connecting Dover, Ashford, and Romney Marsh are currently diverted, starting and terminating at Middelburg Square.
