Three police officers have received awards from the Royal Humane Society after helping pull a driver from a wreckage and assisting in an extraordinary life-saving resuscitation.
The drama unfolded in November 2025 in Sheerness when patrolling officers were flagged down following a crash where a car had left the road and hit a tree. Access was initially blocked by heavy hedging until a member of the public used a chainsaw to clear the vegetation. Officers then managed to open the door, discovering the driver trapped, unconscious, and not breathing.
Working alongside fire crews and paramedics, officers removed the casualty from the vehicle. CPR was administered at the scene for nearly an hour before crews made the heart-wrenching call to stop, believing the driver had passed away. However, as he was being transferred into an ambulance, noises were heard, and a final check revealed he had miraculously resumed breathing.
Medical staff at the scene remarked they had never witnessed such a recovery, directly crediting the early intervention and sustained teamwork of the emergency services. The officers were formally recognized for their calm professionalism and tenacity during the Chief Constable’s Awards Ceremony on 1 September 2026.
